Booster Dome Assembly Transport for Space Manufacturing
with a Customized Heavy-Duty Platform HUBTEX SFX-40

When a U.S. space launch manufacturer needed to transport a critical dome assembly used within booster manufacturing operations, conventional material handling methods proved inadequate. The 78,000 lb load, combined with a high center of gravity, outdoor travel requirements, confined production spaces, and stringent safety expectations, demanded a purpose-built solution.

HUBTEX engineered a customized SFX-40 heavy-duty multidirectional platform truck specifically for the application to make the transport process safer, more stable and more repeatable.

The Challenge: Moving High-Value Space Hardware Safely and Repeatably

The customer needed a reliable way to transport a booster dome assembly and its associated tooling fixture within a complex manufacturing environment. The total transported load approached 78,000 lbs.

Several factors made the application particularly demanding:

  • conventional forklifts did not provide the required capacity and stability,
  • overhead cranes could not support movement between buildings,
  • outdoor travel routes included expansion gaps and floor transitions,
  • the load had a high and offset center of gravity,
  • manufacturing booths provided only limited maneuvering space,
  • the existing lifting method restricted production throughput.

The customer required a solution that could improve safety, increase positioning accuracy and support future production demands.

The HUBTEX Solution
A Tailored SFX-40 Heavy-duty Platform Truck for Booster Dome Transport

HUBTEX developed a customized SFX-40 multidirectional platform truck specifically adapted to the application. The transporter combined electric drive technology with hydraulic lifting cylinders and a purpose-built frame. The frame design lowered the overall center of gravity and improved load stability during transport. Because the assembly’s center of gravity was offset, the load arms were designed to position the transporter directly beneath the true center of gravity of the load.

Color-coded alignment features on the load arms and latching mechanisms provided clear visual feedback during engagement and helped operators execute the process with confidence.

Precision Positioning Through Application-Specific Steering

The tooling fixture interfaced with the transporter through a four-pin engagement system. To simplify alignment, HUBTEX developed a specialized steering function for this application. Operators first aligned the initial engagement pin. The dedicated steering mode then allowed the SFX-40 to rotate around the established pivot point and align the remaining three pins with high precision.

Once engaged, the assembly was lifted and secured using four mechanical twist-locking pins. This provided positive load retention throughout transport.

Maneuverability in Confined Production Spaces

The SFX-40’s patented omnidirectional drive technology proved essential within the customer’s confined manufacturing environment. Operators could maneuver longitudinally, laterally, diagonally and rotationally without repeated repositioning.

In one critical operation, the transporter was used to remove the dome assembly from the production booth, rotate the complete assembly 180 degrees and reposition it back into the same workspace — an operation that would have been extremely difficult using conventional transport equipment.

Engineering Validation for a Safety-Critical Transport Process

Given the size and sensitivity of the aerospace assembly, extensive analysis was required throughout the design process.

Engineering evaluations included:

  • structural stress analysis,
  • stability calculations for the elevated center of gravity,
  • wind load assessments during outdoor operation,
  • emergency stop performance and controlled deceleration analysis,
  • traversal evaluations for floor transitions and expansion joints.

The completed system underwent proof-load testing to 130% of rated capacity and was delivered with CE certification.

Representatives from the customer’s team traveled to Germany to participate in the Factory Acceptance Test prior to shipment. Following installation, HUBTEX conducted onsite commissioning and operator training at the customer’s facility to ensure successful implementation.

Results: Higher Throughput, Fewer Resources, Greater Confidence

Improved production throughput

The previous process allowed only one dome assembly to be positioned within the booth at a time. With the customized SFX-40, operators were able to manage three to four dome assemblies simultaneously, eliminating a critical manufacturing bottleneck.

Reduced labor requirements

The streamlined process reduced manpower requirements from one operator supported by multiple spotters to one operator and one spotter.

Enhanced safety and stability

The customized load handling features, center-of-gravity optimization and mechanical retention system improved confidence when transporting a high-value aerospace assembly.

Increased operational flexibility

The combination of indoor maneuverability and outdoor transport capability enabled one vehicle concept to support the entire transport process.

The Defining Moment: From Complex Lift to Repeatable Manufacturing Operation

Following onsite commissioning and operator training at the customer’s facility, the team prepared to execute the first production lift using the newly commissioned HUBTEX SFX-40 platform transporter.

The heavy-duty platform maneuvered beneath the tooling fixture with ease as the operator aligned the initial engagement pin. Once the specialized steering mode was activated, the SFX-40 rotated precisely around the established pivot point, allowing the remaining pins to align smoothly and efficiently. After the load was fully engaged, the transporter lifted the 78,000 lb assembly with exceptional stability and control.

The customer was particularly impressed by the smooth operation of the vehicle, the ease of use provided by the application-specific steering functionality and the overall build quality of the HUBTEX solution.

Conclusion: Safe, Precise and Repeatable Aerospace Assembly Transport

The customized platform transporter HUBTEX SFX-40 enabled the customer to safely increase throughput while handling a highly sensitive 78,000 lb aerospace assembly.

By combining multidirectional technology with application-specific engineering, HUBTEX transformed a challenging transport process into a repeatable, efficient manufacturing operation.

This project demonstrates HUBTEX’s ability to engineer customized solutions for the world’s most demanding material handling applications — including those supporting the future of space exploration.
